Mass and litany in honour of Blessed Frederic Ozanam

MASS IN HONOR OF  BLESSED FRÉDÉRIC OZANAM

September 9

 FRÉDÉRIC OZANAM

Liturgy of the word

Give a hearing to the poor person and deliver the oppressed from the hand of
the oppressor.

A reading from the book of  Sirach  3:29-30; 4:1-10

The mind of the intelligent man will ponder a parable, and an attentive ear is the wise man’s desire.

Water extinguishes a blazing fire: so almsgiving atones for sin. Whoever requites favors gives thought to the future; at the moment of his falling he will find support.

My son, deprive no the poor of his living, and do not keep needy eyes waiting. Do not grieve the one who is hungry, nor anger a man in want. Do not add to the troubles of an angry mind, nor delay your gift to a beggar. Do not reject an afflicted suppliant, nor turn you face away from the poor. Do not avert your eye from the needy, nor give a man occasion to curse you; for if in bitterness of soul he calls down a curse upon you, his Creator will hear his prayer.

Make yourself beloved in the congregation; bow your head low to a great man. Incline your ear to the poor, and answer him peaceably and gently. Deliver him who is wronged from the hand of the wrongdoer; and do not be fainthearted in judging a case. Be like a father to orphans, and like a husband to their mother; you will then be like a son of the Most High, and he will love you more than
does your mother.

Psalm

R. Listen, Lord, to the poor person and deliver the oppressed
from the hand of the oppressor.

Give the king thy judgements,
O God, and thy righteousness unto the king’s son.
He shall judge thy people with righteousness,
And thy poor with judgement.

The mountains shall bring peace to the people,
and the little hills, by righteousness.
He shall judge the poor of the people,
he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.

He shall spare the poor and needy,
and shall save the souls of the needy.
He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence:
and precious shall their blood be in his sight.

His name shall endure for ever:
his name shall be continued as long as the sun:
and men shall be blessed in him:
all nations shall call him blessed.

Alleluia

I give you a new commandment, says the Lord : love one another.

Gospel Lk 10, 25-37

And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying "Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said unto him, "What is written in the law? How readest thou?

And he answering said, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself". And he said unto him, "Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live".

But he willing to justify himself , said unto Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

And Jesus answering said, "A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed leaving him half dead.  And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he was him, he passed by on the other side.
And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.  But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him.  And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.  And whatsoever thou
spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.  Which now of these three, thickets thou, was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves?".

And he said, "He that shewed mercy on him".

Then said Jesus unto him, "Go, and do thou likewise".
